This report offers policy advice to Greece on building interlinkages between its national environmental policies, and gender equality policies, under the gender-environment nexus. It builds on a related report, Gender and the Environment: Building Evidence and Policies to Achieve the SDGs (2021), which explored the links between gender equality and environmental sustainability in the context of Agenda 2030, applying an integrated policy framework taking into account both inclusive growth and environmental considerations.

Gender equality and environmental sustainability, the two components of the gender-environment nexus, require immediate action at national and international levels. The environmental and climate crises and social inequalities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic have prompted countries to increase action on both fronts. Yet an integrated approach is often lacking, with countries missing the opportunity to explore trade-offs and complementarities between gender equality and environmental sustainability, and to minimise potential negative impacts of environmental and climate policies.
-
This chapter presents the gender-environment nexus and proposes a policy framework that could be introduced by Greece and other countries wishing to coherently integrate gender equality and environmental sustainability into their national policy making. It gives an overview of the analysis and methodology used to prepare this report, including limitations due to insufficient data.

This chapter assesses the gender sensitivity of policy actions and tools prioritised under Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), National Action Plan against Energy Poverty, Just Transition Development Plan, National Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation, circular economy policy framework, and new biodiversity landscape. It presents interlinkages with gender equality and women’s economic empowerment, as well as examples of how other OECD countries integrate the gender-environment nexus into their own policies.

This chapter assesses gender equality legislation and policies and practices for environmental sustainability in Greece, with a focus on women’s economic empowerment in the green economy. It identifies gaps under the gender-environment nexus, proposes ways of mainstreaming gender in national policies, and includes good practices in other OECD countries for tackling discrimination, increasing women’s participation in green jobs, and investing in girls’ and women’s education and training in green skills and eco-innovation.
