This document contains a set of 15 fact cards on major groups of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The fact cards aim to provide non-expert stakeholders a quick initial glance into these groups of PFASs with some basic information on: (1) chemical identities, synthesis and inherent properties such as bioaccumulation and transformation, (2) historical and ongoing industrial practices and commercial uses of some major commercial products, (3) regulatory status, (4) examples of reported occurrences in the environment and humans, and (5) major knowledge gaps in terms of previous sections. The fact cards also provide references where interested readers may find additional information; note that due to the fast-moving nature of the science and knowledge on PFASs, the listed references are by no means complete. For information and practical guidance on the use of terminology in regard to PFASs, readers are referred to the OECD PFAS Terminology report.

Quality and reliable statistics are pivotal for evidence-based policymaking. The COVID-19 crisis has shed light on the importance of high-quality statistics to measure the impact of government initiatives and to design policies to support an inclusive and sustainable recovery. Strengthening statistical capacities is therefore central to Ukraine’s successful sustainable growth agenda. With this in mind, the Government of Ukraine introduced the Programme for the Development of State Statistics until 2023, which aims to provide objective, reliable and unbiased statistical information according to international best practices, including those of the OECD. With the financial support of Israel and Poland, the OECD conducted the project Improving Statistics Development in Ukraine 2021 which contributed to building the capacity of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (SSSU) to collect relevant data and producing high-quality statistical information that can serve as a key input for policymaking. In the framework of this project, the OECD organised three capacity-building webinars, tailored to the needs of the SSSU and relevant line Ministries, sharing OECD know-how and drawing on the expertise of Statistics Poland and the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics. This report synthetises the substance of these webinars and highlights key takeaways.

Did you ever wonder what the impact of climate change will be on our educational institutions in the next decade? What does it mean for schools that our societies are becoming more individualistic and diverse?

Trends Shaping Education is a triennial report examining major economic, political, social and technological trends affecting education. While the trends are robust, the questions raised in this book are suggestive, and aim to inform strategic thinking and stimulate reflection on the challenges facing education.

This 2022 edition covers a rich array of topics related to economic growth, living and working, knowledge and power, identity and belonging and our physical world and human bodies and interactions. It includes a specific focus on the impact of COVID‑19 on global trends, and new futures thinking sections inviting readers to reflect on how the future might differ from our current expectations.

This book is designed to give policy makers, researchers, educational leaders, administrators and teachers a robust, non-specialist source of international comparative trends shaping education, whether in schools, universities or in programmes for older adults. It will also be of interest to students and the wider public, including parents.

This annual publication provides detailed statistics on labour force, employment and unemployment, broken down by gender, as well as unemployment duration, employment status, employment by sector of activity and part-time employment. It also contains participation and unemployment rates by gender and detailed age groups as well as comparative tables for the main components of the labour force. Data are available for each OECD member country and for OECD-Total, Euro area and European Union. The time series presented in the publication cover 10 years for most countries. It also provides information on the sources and definitions used by member countries in the compilation of those statistics.

This report highlights the key outcomes of the 2021 OECD Services Trade Restrictiveness Index (STRI) update; notably finding that global services trade regulations showed signs of liberalisation in 2021, slowing the steady build-up of trade barriers identified in previous years.

After a deep recession in 2020, economic activity has rebounded. However, supply disruptions and a low vaccination rate are making the future pace of the recovery more uncertain. An ambitious recovery plan and substantial inflows of EU funds provide a unique opportunity to strengthen the economy, but effective and timely implementation will require continued efforts to improve public procurement and public investment management. In the medium-term, rapid population ageing will exacerbate fiscal challenges and weigh on long-term growth. To prepare for an ageing society, pension, health and long-term care, and labour market reforms are needed to extend working lives, improve the health of the ageing population, and enhance the efficiency of public spending. At the same time, population ageing reinforces the need to boost productivity. To reinvigorate the economic convergence process and make growth more inclusive and sustainable, policies to promote adequate skills, foster domestic innovation capacity, and better price environmentally harmful activities are needed.

SPECIAL FEATURE: ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES FROM POPULATION AGEING

Brazil made significant progress in managing water resources since the adoption of the National Water Law in 1997 and the creation of the National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA) in 2000. Nevertheless, water security challenges persist and will be aggravated by megatrends such as climate change, population growth, urbanisation, and the economic, social and environmental consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report calls for a modern approach to water security, balancing supply and demand management, grey and green infrastructure, and risk management and resilience while embracing a holistic view that connects water to other strategic areas such as environment, land use and territorial development. The report builds on a decade of policy dialogue between the OECD and the National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA) of Brazil. It provides an action plan to support the country to: (1) shift from a risk-based approach to a resilience approach to understand vulnerabilities and minimise the duration and magnitude of failures; (2) make river basin organisations deliver and use economic instruments to tackle water risks; and (3) accompany infrastructure development with regulatory oversight and monitoring.
